LA Fashion Designer: Marina Rahlin

from the Popavina collection

Marina Rahlin’s collection of cocktail dresses are sophisticated and whimsical at once. Classic and sexy silhouettes with modern details, such as unexpected cut-outs, contrast fabrics, colors and graphic prints that pop!  The look is feminine, bold and eclectic as the designer herself. I had the opportunity to interview Marina, via email about what inspires her.

You mention in your site that rock n’ roll is part of what inspires you…what music are you listening to now?

right now, I’m listening to Gogol Bordello, they are a Gypsy punk band and they are amazing! I saw them live, here in L.A, and they are just great performers. I also just start listening to Astrud Gilberto, she’s a bossa nova singer, and I think her style matches my designs very well, she’s very feminine and has a retro vibe to her.

What else inspires you to design?

the street inspires me to design, if I’m out somewhere and I see a girl wearing something interesting, I’ll remember that and than go home and design a dress with that detail in mind, also colors, I’m a big fan of colors, the more the better!

What can you tell me about this collection of dresses?

this collection was inspired by the 1920’s, I did a lot of research on flappers, silhouettes and  the culture back than, the more I read the more I liked it and I knew that was the right choice for this collection.

Do you have a muse?

I think I have many different muses, for this one it was the 1920’s actress, Louise Brooks. she has her own signature style and I read she had the mouth of a sailor, which made me love her even more!

Where are you from, and what brought you to LA?

I’m from Israel, and moved to LA three years ago to attend FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) and so far, I think it was a good decision.

How long ago did you graduate from FIDM? Also, how was the experience there?

I graduated from FIDM a year ago and it was the hardest and most satisfying time of my life. It was very hectic, but I learned a lot, it really made me push my boundaries. I actually miss it sometimes!

What don’t they teach you in design school, that you wish they did?

I wish I would have more classes related to the business side of fashion. Now that I have my own line, there’s a lot more I need to know about production, marketing and etc.

Do you think LA has a specific style?

I do think LA has a specific style, girls have ‘casual chic,’ lots of knits and denim shorts. I love that but I want to bring something original, there’s so many girls who want to look different and wear color, not just black, white, beige and gray. I design for that girl – the one that enters a party and everybody looks at her cause she has such an innovative style.

What change do you want to see in fashion?

I want people to think that there’s fashion forward style in L.A, not just New York. also, I’m hoping in the next couple of years we will have a fashion week as huge as the New York one!

What are you working on now?

now I’m working on my new website:, it should be done very soon and its going to be amazing.

I’m also working on a Winter collection.  For now, people can buy my dresses on and soon on my website. I also make custom made garments!
